403 - Eagle Pommel With Serpentine Grip

This dirk has an unusual serpentine grip configuration.  It has a curved pommel with eagle facing down, a partially feathered back strap and a ribbed hand formed ivory grip.   The missing chain knuckle bow was once attached to the eagle’s beak.  The cross guard has simple reverse flat disc quillons.    The curved blue and gilded double-edged diamond shaped blade is 13 inch long and 7/8 inch wide.  The obverse motifs are generic floral sprays and the reverse motifs are similar sprays plus a stand of arms. The blade is well rusted and has never been cleaned.  The leather scabbard has simple scalloped brass mounts with two carrying rings.  It dates very early 19th century.  SOLD

 


115 Thurkle Eagle Pommel Dirk C1790

A classic Thurkle eagle pommel dirk with the FT cartouche on the underside of the guard. The grip is reeded ivory with a simple brass ferrule and simple guard with turned down quillons. The blade is straight with a single narrow fuller and 14-1/2 inches long. $1500  


117 Thurkle Pillow Pommel Dirk With Turned Down Guard C1790

Typical Thurkle pillow pommel dirk with FT cartouche on the underside of the guard. The grip is reeded ivory with a simple brass ferrule and simple guard with turned down quillons. There is a large crack in the ivory grip. The blade is straight with a single narrow fuller and 16-1/2  inches long. $1300


118 French Made US Dirk (Book Plate 5.51)

This is an unusual dirk with straight blade that was probably French made. It has a tapered octagonal ivory grip with a diamond inset with a foliate brass pommel and octagonal ferrule. Just below the ferrule are pas d’anes rings (the arms of the hilt) that are broken off. The top side of the flat oval guard is chased with floral sprays and its bottom is plain. The long thin diamond shaped blade is 11-3/4 inch by 1/2 inch and blue and gilded over most of its length. The obverse gilded motifs include a stand of arms with generic floral sprays above and below. The reverse motifs include an early eagle with generic floral sprays above and below. The brass scabbard is finely engraved on both sides with two carrying rings. The obverse has three diamonds on stippled backgrounds within a series of vertical perimeter lines with flowers at their intersections. The reverse has the same perimeter line engravings. The ring mounts are plain on the obverse and finely engraved with diagonals on the reverse. SOLD
